With whom, then, will you compare God?

    To what image will you liken Him?  Isaiah 40:18

Although I often try, I cannot capture the glory of God’s creation with a camera.  I’ve seen some beautiful photographs, a few of which are my own, but as hard as I try, I just can’t do His beauty justice!  Panoramas are sometimes a little more revealing, but a great deal remains unseen.

When I look at a picture, I cannot smell the aroma of a flower, hear the roar of a waterfall or the melody of a bird singing in the trees.  I cannot feel the cold of the snow, the warmth of the sun or the breeze that touched the photographer in that moment, when the lense was dialed into focus with great patience and care.

Likewise, when trying to describe God, I run into a similar dilemma; only the challenge is exponentially greater. How can I describe the One whose ways are so high above my own?  How can I capture the essence of a Creator who fills the entire universe and beyond?  Words that usually fit nicely, pale enormously, when considering the character and quality of the LORD of lords and KING of kings.

He is the infinite, all-powerful Creator and Sustainer of life; yet, so much more!

He is Protector of the weak and oppressed; justice without partiality; yet, so much more!

He is perfect and holy; with Whom, no-one can compare; yet, so much more!

He is true and faithful.  He cannot lie and will never let me down; yet, so much more!

He is loving, kind, patient, compassionate, merciful, gracious…yet, so much more!

In reality, I don’t have to describe God.  He is far more able than I, so I simply point to Him, and He comes through without fail, every time.

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.  Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge.  They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them.  Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.    Psalms 19:1-4a

Praise the Lord.

Praise the Lord from the heavens;
 praise Him in the heights above.
Praise Him, all His angels;
 praise Him, all His heavenly hosts.
Praise Him, sun and moon;
 praise Him, all you shining stars.
Praise Him, you highest heavens
 and you waters above the skies.

Let them praise the name of the Lord,
 for at His command they were created,
and He established them for ever and ever—
   a decree that will never pass away.

Psalms 148:1-6

He set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved.

He makes springs pour water into the ravines;
 it flows between the mountains.
They give water to all the beasts of the field;
 the wild donkeys quench their thirst.
The birds of the sky nest by the waters;
 they sing among the branches.
He waters the mountains from His upper chambers;
 the land is satisfied by the fruit of His work.  Psalms 104: 5, 10-13

How many are Your works, Lord!
 In wisdom You made them all;
 the earth is full of Your creatures.
There is the sea, vast and spacious,
 teeming with creatures beyond number—
 living things both large and small.  Psalms 104:24-25

For you created my inmost being;

    you knit me together in my mother’s womb.

I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;

    your works are wonderful,

    I know that full well.

My frame was not hidden from you

    when I was made in the secret place,

    when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.

Your eyes saw my unformed body;

    all the days ordained for me were written in your book

    before one of them came to be.         Psalms 139:13-16

"For in Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through Him and for Him."  Colossians 1:16

Even choosing pictures to illustrate the glory of His creation, I find myself back at the dilemma mentioned earlier. I could share thousands of pictures, and they could not do Him justice, yet, I can look at what He's made and I’m reminded there is no limit to His power.  Indeed, He is good!
